'03 W8 4-Motion, One owner, 108k, all this for only $5,000. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is a great deal. Reliability can kiss my shiny metal ass.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Like this is no ordinary Passat, it may be in Grandma's futon green. But it's got a monster of an engine and this one is especially nice because of the condition.

For the longest time I've been trying to figure out how a W8 is laid out. It it two banks of four cylinders in a W shape, or one long block with the eight cylinders in a W formation?

Does anyone have a handle on the real running cost of a car like this?
![]() 11/16/2014 at 18:52 |

I'm not really sure myself. I feel like the majority of people who own these aren't actually enthusiasts though and don't realize that what they have is more than a fancier version of the regular Passat.

If you can buy it for peanuts and keep it on the road for 3-4 grand a year, it's realistic. But it's got to be the most complicated thing with a VW badge save the Phaeton W12. But if you have something else to drive while it's in the shop, why not?

That's the thing. I'm not exactly sure about the running costs, and if I got a 2nd car. It would have two wheels.

As long as the winters are mild where you live ... and I put a big Yamaha down the first time I tried a bike - that was enough. Give me a Volvo filled with airbags.

Northern Va. winters are alright. I've got an A4 Quattro which has be covered though.
What kind of Yamaha was it?

I'm looking for an inexpensive DD, sub-$4k and ran across this:

Your post is making me want to throw caution to the wind. I told my wife who drives an X3 that with VW it's not a matter of IF but WHEN it will break.

You look at the picture of the block and think, "Hey, that looks pretty neat." Then you look at the internal diagram with the pistons and connecting rods and balance shafts and think, "Dear Lord, what kind of monster have we created?"

At least that one is a pre-facelift (B5), two wheel drive, 5 speed. B5 Passats seem to be more reliable than the later B5.5 Passats. I've known people with both types, and those with the B5s had few complaints. Those with the B5.5, however, experienced things like engine failure, automatic transmission failure (ours), and an AWD system that felt like you got rear-ended any time you stopped. Not to mention trim pieces and interior and control lighting failing. And other things that I'm probably forgetting.
